Art Practice

Recent events made me feel rather melancholy and need to do some Ruby scripting, which reminded me of _why, making me both more melancholy and more inspired. I consider _why a fantastic example of a modern renaissance man, always creating something, be it by means of drawing, writing, musical composition, or coding. If I understand correctly he consider(s|ed)1 computer code a art form in and of itself, a view which I can agree with. Reflecting upon myself though, I am disappointed that I have for some years been neglecting to develop other skills2 besides programming. So, I have decided to make a deliberate effort to do something a bit artistic each day, possibly including but not limited to drawing or otherwise creating visual art3, writing prose or maybe poetry4, or some manner of musical composition.

Here's the first result, specifically a product of my current mood and thoughts:

A gray scene with a faint tinge of red, fading to blackness at the bottom border. In the foreground, scattered cubes, and barely visible in the background the outline of a tower of some sort.

  1. Tense is a little tricky when writing about a person who almost certainly still exists, but an identity which roughly does not.

  2. Restricting the scope of discussion to hobby activities, and so not taking into consideration my science skills and knowledge, which I've been expending a lot of effort to develop.

  3. Given my lack of ability to render anything not simple and geometrical when drawing and also of any means to get hand created pictures into my computer, where I intend to stockpile my results, for the immediate future I expect to stick to what I can make with bitmap painting/drawing and 3D modeling.

  4. I'm very picky about poetry, such that I've only ever encountered a few examples that I approve of, and I'm not really up to creating anything to meet that standard. As a result, I likely won't try.
